Schemas (Patterns of Repeated Behaviour)
Our planning, based on close observation of children’s play, ensures that children’s strong patterns of behaviour (schemas) are supported and extended. This is especially important with young children, but even as adults we have preferred ways of learning that we can build on.
Staff are happy to share their understanding of schemas with you, and you can explore the role of schemas in children’s learning in the Schema Workshop or Study Group (see in Parents section).
Understanding more about a child’s schemas can explain some of the strange things your child seems to need to do (does he or she spend time carrying everything around, tying things up, kicking and throwing, hiding everything under covers, lining all the toys up.....?).
We can give you a schema spotters list.
Awareness of schemas helps us to plan appropriately, working with these deep needs and patterns to ensure progress.
We want to hear what you have noticed about your child’s schemas, so we can plan together to support and extend them, or maybe to redirect some of the more disruptive ones!
